Living in Age of Material Abundance and Spiritual Poverty

Never before in the history of the world, has a culture produced so much wealth and so much leisure time like we have in the US. And yet, we have only get sicker; physically, mentally and spiritually. Ourselves and our children.

Materialism is the new religion of our age. The belief that humans are solely physical objects without any intrinsic value or innate purpose. No longer endowed by our Creator with any inalienable rights, because we have no Creator.

Humans are nothing more than cosmic dust that somehow randomly became what we are now. An arrogant belief that’s stranger than fiction because it is fiction and a lie. An absurd belief that has become the prevailing mentality of the modern Western world. An asinine belief that no other humans believed over the entire course of human history up until now.

People aren’t people but things that are here for a limited time. Stripped of our spirituality, we  exist today and are gone tomorrow. Grass that withers and flowers that fade and fall away.

A temporal morality that reduces humans to things to be used by others. Survival of the fittest to exploit the weakest. An ethic as twisted as a serpent coiling before it strikes its victim with venom and virulency. Delivering deceit and death.

An approach to life that’s anti-life, anti-human and anti-God which means it’s also anti-love. A perspective that contradicts every religion and natural law. Reducing us to animals to be preyed upon by other animals. A societal system rewarding those at the top because those at the bottom are insignificant and expendable.

Our national government, state and local governments, and institutions have all been infected by this virus of materialism. You’re not a free-thinking individual or even a citizen, but a tool for tyrants. To serve them as opposed to God. And if you’re loyalty isn’t to God alone, it ain’t good for you or those who you love. Loyalty isn’t something that can be divided between two kingdoms.

We live in a culture that rewards and encourages death. The US continues to support a war machine that slaughters innocent people on a daily basis. The US continues to support companies that poison innocent people on a daily basis. The US continues to support a financial system that cheats innocent people on a daily basis.

States murder other humans in the name of justice. States allow abortion on demand in the name of choice. States encourage all our vices, so they can tax liquor and lotteries, cigarettes and cannabis.

Materialism has become all about money, because our government and all our institutions have become only about money. Health advocacy organizations that accept millions from big food and big pharma. Conveniently forgetting that the only reason companies exist is to generate profit for their shareholders.

In our attempt to heal ourselves, we buy one self-help book after another. Believing this book will change our lives even if every self-help book that’s published happens because the publisher believes that they can make money, not heal you. False promises made; money kept.

Until of course the next self-help comes out with new promises by the same author or publisher. Cycling through recycled ideas that have nothing to do with actually healing you, just like the drugs that pharma companies advertise 24/7. Any sane person seeing how sick we’ve really become as a nation because healing can never happen when the real motive is wealth not health.

There is hope for humanity, but only if we embrace our entire humanity. Reconnecting our whole selves to our whole being. Recognizing what all humans have known to be true, we are both physical and spiritual creatures. Soil and soul.

Created not as tools to serve others or spiritual evil, but blessings to serve God alone. In serving God, our purpose becomes clear; love one another. Instead of what we want, or money or any human ruler or institution.

Living in this sea of abundance is perilous and treacherous not only for our physical selves but also for our spiritual selves. It cuts us off from one another and from those who have gone before us. Those who we can learn from as we live our lives and learn to love one another.

Rejecting materialism begins with embracing your whole humanity and surrendering your heart to God. A sheltered harbor to heal and feed your soul. A foundation of true strength and genuine comfort built upon prayer and reflection. Volunteering your time and giving generously. Finding fellowship with faithful followers and studying the word of God which endures forever.

This is where spiritual poverty ends, and material abundance is given its proper perspective. Not as an idol but as a gift from God. A gift we’re no longer enslaved too. A gift that blesses all people because all people reflect the Divine. A gift that liberates us from living a life as minions of materialism.

Peace. God loves you.
